Russians Bought Up All the Kumys Ahead of the Year of the Fire Horse

In the run-up to the Year of the Fire Horse, Russians have started actively purchasing kumis, leading to a shortage on store shelves. According to the publication "Baza," the consumption of this traditional drink, made from mare's milk, has nearly doubled compared to 2023.

Analysts from "Chestny Znak" report that the sales volume of kumis in 2025 exceeded 1.3 million liters. They also noted that over the past two years, the number of sellers of this fermented milk product has increased by 35 percent.

Bashkortostan remains the leader in kumis sales, holding the top position for the third consecutive year. By the end of the current year, there will be 155.27 liters of this drink per 1,000 people in the republic. The top five regions with the highest kumis consumption also include Yakutia (73.11 liters per 1,000 people), the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (46.49 liters), the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (34.31 liters), and Tatarstan (25.8 liters).
