Nowruz, symbolizing the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new year, has deep roots in Azerbaijani culture. In Karakol, Asif Ogly Talibov and his family prepare for the holiday by following ancient rituals. He emphasizes that one of the key customs is the cultivation of samani — sprouted wheat, which occupies a central place on the festive table. “We moisten the grains and leave them in warmth until sprouts appear. This symbolizes renewal, abundance, and well-being,” explains Asif Ogly.

On the festive table, samani is surrounded by brightly colored eggs, gorgo (fried wheat), and watermelon seeds. Asif notes that gorgo is a favorite treat for children, who love to carry it in their pockets and enjoy it during the holiday.

Fatima Talibova, Asif's granddaughter and a 12-year-old student, spoke about the tradition of decorating eggs. “We dye them in different colors and sometimes draw patterns. After the holiday, we start playing: one person holds an egg, and another tries to break it with theirs. Whose egg cracks loses, and the winner takes both eggs,” she shares.

Dovga is another traditional dish that must be present on the table that day. “This is a national Azerbaijani dish made from greens that grow only in the mountainous regions of our country. We order it from there. To prepare dovga, kefir or ayran is diluted with water and brought to a boil, then a little rice and greens are added, mixing thoroughly. The dish cooks for about 20 minutes,” explains Asif's daughter-in-law, Ainar Talibova.

Asif Ogly Talibov heads the public association "Khazar," which connects the Azerbaijani community of Karakol. He notes that diaspora residents actively participate in city celebrations, thereby strengthening friendships with other peoples.

Aibek Mayrykov, head of the Issyk-Kul branch of the Assembly of the People of Kyrgyzstan, emphasizes that around 40 different nationalities live in the region, each celebrating Nowruz according to their customs. “The Assembly supports both ethnic and Kyrgyz traditional holidays. Nowruz is a common spring holiday for all Turkic peoples, celebrated with consideration for the unique characteristics of each diaspora,” he adds.

The Azerbaijanis of Karakol not only preserve their traditions but also actively participate in the public life of the region, creating an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding.
