Today, an important document officially comes into effect — the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. This is reported by the UN News Service.

According to the information, the agreement was adopted in June 2023. Since then, it has been signed by 145 countries, with 81 of them having already completed the ratification process.

The document significantly strengthens the legal framework for the protection of two-thirds of the world's oceans, based on the principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. It creates important frameworks for intergovernmental and inter-agency cooperation in the exploration of ocean resources.

Effective implementation of this agreement could significantly contribute to achieving ocean-related Sustainable Development Goals and the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biodiversity.

"Coastal ecosystems are suffering from toxic chemicals and millions of tons of plastic waste, leading to the death of fish, sea turtles, birds, and mammals or causing them significant harm. Hazardous particles also enter the human food chain. In 2021, over 17 million tons of plastic were dumped into the ocean, accounting for 85% of all marine debris. If no action is taken, by 2050 the amount of plastic in the seas could exceed the number of fish," the message notes.

The agreement also establishes obligations for those who pollute the oceans and implements mechanisms for conflict resolution. According to its provisions, parties are required to assess the impact of their activities on the environment in waters beyond national jurisdiction.

According to scientists, nearly 200,000 species of marine organisms are currently described, although the actual number may be significantly higher.
