In Bishkek, the problem of traffic jams continues to be one of the most pressing issues. Mayor Aibek Junushaliev shared his thoughts on ways to address this issue in a podcast organized by the Kabar agency, discussing plans for the future.

According to him, there are over 460,000 registered vehicles in the city, and the existing infrastructure cannot cope with such a volume. Work to improve the situation began in 2024, but the mayor emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach to solving the problem.

He also noted that widening the roadway is not just an attempt to accommodate more cars, but a necessity to align the streets with the city’s master plan.

“Some roads are built up with buildings that are beyond the established boundaries. We aim to restore the streets to their normative appearance,” added Aibek Junushaliev.

Furthermore, he pointed out the need to impose restrictions after the completion of road repairs and the construction of interchanges. The mayor reminded of the strong public reaction to the project limiting traffic on even and odd days, emphasizing that society needs time to adapt to such changes.

“In the future, it is necessary to increase parking fees in the center of Bishkek. Residents should clearly understand that it is better to use public transport in the center, while using a car for trips to the outskirts. We must make the choice in favor of public transport a natural one,” the mayor concluded.
