With the rotational presidency passing to the United States, the First Lady will take on this role for the first time. Her speech will focus on children, technology, and education.
“This is a historic moment: Melania Trump, as First Lady, will become the chair of the Security Council on the first day of the U.S. presidency,” noted the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, Mike Waltz. “Let’s make the UN great again!”
Melania Trump's office clarified that her speech will concentrate on the theme of “Children, technology, and education in conflict situations.” She emphasizes the importance of education as a means of promoting tolerance and peace worldwide.
A UN representative added that this will be the first instance of the spouse of a sitting world leader chairing a meeting of the Security Council, which consists of 15 members, Reuters reports.
Typically, such meetings are led by an ambassador or a senior official from the country currently holding the rotational presidency.
