The appointment of Maria Vorontsova became known through a press release from the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Moscow State University, which is part of the new institute.

Other changes in the leadership are also mentioned in this announcement. Konstantin Kulebyakin has become the new deputy director for research, while Maxim Domashenko has taken the position of deputy director for clinical activities, responsible for the University Clinic of the MNOI.

The Medical Scientific and Educational Institute was established in November 2023 by the decision of the Academic Council of Moscow State University and combined the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and the university clinic. The first director of the institute was biologist Vsevolod Tkachuk, and Maria Vorontsova was then appointed as the deputy director for scientific activities.

By profession, Maria Vorontsova is an endocrinologist. She graduated from the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Moscow State University, then underwent training in residency and postgraduate studies at the Federal State Budgetary Institution "National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology." In 2017, she was awarded a PhD for her work on the treatment of children with pituitary dwarfism. Throughout her career, she has worked in various scientific and educational institutions and was a member of the council for the implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, also holding the position of deputy dean at the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Moscow State University.

After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, Maria Vorontsova, like her sister Ekaterina Tikhonova, found herself under sanctions from the European Union, the United States, and other countries.

According to information published by the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Vorontsova received significant payments from "New Medical Company" ("NOMEKO"), where she was not only a board member but also one of the co-founders. The publication "Project" reported that the company is engaged in research in the field of genetic technologies and anti-aging medicine.
