At a meeting of the parliamentary committee dealing with industrial policy, transport, and construction, Irina Grishechkina, the deputy director of the Scientific Research Institute of Prospective Urban Planning, noted that housing provision in Bishkek is a serious problem.
On average, there are only 14 square meters of living space per resident of the city.
“According to forecasts, the population of Bishkek will increase to 1.92 million people, which implies an increase of 600,000. To improve housing provision to 23 square meters per person, we will need an additional 26 million square meters of residential space. The total volume of construction in the city at the moment is 18 million square meters,” she explained.
It is worth noting that specialists from the Institute have developed a master plan for the development of Bishkek until 2050 at the request of the city administration.
