At the meeting of the "Mekenchil" deputy group on January 30, Umbetaly Kydyraliyev urged the Bishkek city administration not to rush into implementing the tram project outlined in the new general plan.

He raised the question of whether an analysis of the effectiveness of this mode of transport had been conducted.

Vice Mayor Azamat Kadyrov responded that modern trams are different from those that residents remember from Soviet times.

“According to our calculations, the cost of building a monorail will be about 70-80 million soms per kilometer, while a tram will cost 15 million soms. Updates will be conducted every five years. Trams will operate on an air cushion. Such systems are already in place in Arab countries, as well as in China and Korea,” the vice mayor clarified.

However, Kydyraliyev believes that the issue is not only about the economic aspect.

“We are wasting a lot of time in traffic jams. It is important to implement transport that meets the requirements of 2050. If we save on trivial matters, we may miss out on progress. Everything needs to be calculated carefully. I suggest postponing the tram issue. There is no need to rush. Significant technological changes will occur in the next 10-15 years. Ground-based wheeled transport will become archaic. All transportation should shift to the air. We will move on foot or by bicycle. No one will want to stay on the ground and harm the ecology,” the deputy emphasized.
