ICRC: Regional Conference in Bishkek - an important step towards a world free from nuclear threat

A significant regional conference is taking place in Bishkek, bringing together representatives from governments, international organizations, experts, and youth to discuss the role of education in strengthening peace and security. This was reported to the Kabar agency by Biljana Milosevic, head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Central Asia.

She emphasized that in the context of increasing armed conflicts and growing global tensions, such initiatives play an important role in raising awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons use and contribute to dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation.

“Kyrgyzstan occupies an important position in this process, being one of the countries that signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which underscores its commitment to international disarmament efforts and ensuring global security. The holding of this conference also highlights Kyrgyzstan's leadership and its contribution to peace through education and cooperation,” she added.
Milosevic also noted that the ICRC operates worldwide, raising awareness about international humanitarian law and the consequences of weapon use, including nuclear. “By collaborating with governments, armed forces, universities, and NGOs, we support educational initiatives aimed at respecting humanitarian principles and norms in armed conflict situations. We continue to call for more effective implementation of international disarmament agreements and a ban on nuclear weapons due to their devastating humanitarian consequences,” she concluded.

It should be noted that the conference "Education for Peace and Security" is timed to coincide with the International Day for the Universal Access to Information on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and is taking place today in Bishkek.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic with the support of the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.
