This study analyzed data from 185 countries on 36 types of cancer and assessed 30 preventable risk factors, including:
- tobacco and alcohol use;
- high body mass index;
- lack of physical activity;
- air pollution and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
Key Causes
Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of cancer, accounting for 15% of all new cases. In second place are infections, responsible for 10% of new diagnoses, and in third place is alcohol consumption, causing 3% of cases.- Smoking and air pollution lead to lung cancer, stomach cancer is often associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, and cervical cancer is linked to the human papillomavirus.
The study's data also demonstrated significant differences between genders: among men, preventable factors account for 45% of new cancer cases, while among women, this figure is 30%.
The authors emphasize that successful prevention strategies must be tailored to local conditions and include control over the sale of tobacco and alcohol, vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B, improving air quality, enhancing workplace safety, as well as creating conditions for healthy eating and physical activity.
