Four out of ten new cases of cancer are preventable, according to the latest global analysis conducted by the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

This study analyzed data from 185 countries on 36 types of cancer and assessed 30 preventable risk factors, including:

Experts note that in 2022, approximately 7.1 million new cancer cases – 37% – could have been avoided. The authors of the study emphasize the significant potential for prevention to reduce global morbidity.

Key Causes

Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of cancer, accounting for 15% of all new cases. In second place are infections, responsible for 10% of new diagnoses, and in third place is alcohol consumption, causing 3% of cases.

Dr. Andre Ilbavi, head of the WHO Cancer Control Program, noted that this is the first global study showing the scale of the impact of preventable factors, which enables countries and individuals to take more effective measures to reduce risk.

The study's data also demonstrated significant differences between genders: among men, preventable factors account for 45% of new cancer cases, while among women, this figure is 30%.

The authors emphasize that successful prevention strategies must be tailored to local conditions and include control over the sale of tobacco and alcohol, vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B, improving air quality, enhancing workplace safety, as well as creating conditions for healthy eating and physical activity.
