Representatives of states, experts, and international organizations will gather for the forum
From April 22 to 24, 2026, the Regional Environmental Summit (RES) will take place in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. This information was announced by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
About 1500 delegates are expected to participate in the event, representing government structures from Central Asian countries, international organizations, expert groups, the business sector, and civil society.
During the plenary session, speeches are scheduled from the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Mongolia, and other high-ranking guests.
The goal of the summit is to develop joint solutions to climate and environmental issues in cooperation with the United Nations.
The initiative was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023 and was confirmed at the 80th session in 2025.
Support for the summit is provided by important partners such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and other global and regional organizations.
The UN confirmed its support for this initiative through General Assembly resolution 78/147 on December 19, 2023, which emphasizes the importance of strengthening regional solidarity to address environmental issues in Central Asia.
The summit will focus on creating coordinated, practical solutions and mechanisms that address regional climate and environmental challenges, including the issue of the Aral Sea, which has become a symbol of ecological disaster, and the ongoing decline in the level of the Caspian Sea.
Key priorities include identifying the real needs of Central Asia for green financing, supporting adaptation measures, developing low-carbon technologies, and enhancing the region's environmental resilience.
A joint declaration on regional cooperation in ecology and sustainable development is planned to be adopted by the heads of state of Central Asia at the summit.
A regional action program for 2026–2030 will also be approved in cooperation with UN agencies to ensure a sustainable future for Central Asia.
Additionally, the launch of new environmental projects and initiatives in key areas of the summit is expected.
