A unique initiative has started in Berlin: about 4 million kilograms of potatoes will be distributed for free to residents and organizations. This was reported by Kazinform, citing DW.
This campaign is organized by the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper in collaboration with the Berlin company Ecosia. According to the initiators, the total weight of the potatoes is comparable to that of approximately 800 adult elephants.
Interestingly, such a quantity of potatoes could be used to build a tower about 350 meters tall or feed several hundred thousand people.
Currently, the highest quality potatoes are stored in a warehouse near Leipzig, where they are kept under proper conditions. However, unfortunately, there is no demand for them.
The main reason for this is the record harvest: Germany harvested over 13 million tons of potatoes this year, which is the highest figure in the last 25 years and 17% above the average level for many years. Due to the sharp excess of supply over demand, producers are suffering losses and are forced to spend money on storing surplus products.
The idea to transfer the surplus to Berlin came from one of the farmers in Saxony, which became the impetus for organizing this campaign.
