A visa bond is being introduced for citizens of Kyrgyzstan when traveling to the USA

A pilot project with new requirements will begin on January 21, 2026

With the introduction of new rules, citizens of Kyrgyzstan who plan to obtain tourist or business visas of category B1/B2 for trips to the USA will be required to pay a visa bond. This innovation, reported on the official website of the U.S. Department of State, aims to reduce the number of cases of visa overstays, and Kyrgyzstan has become one of the countries participating in the visa bond pilot program.

The bond is an amount that must be paid in addition to the standard visa fee if the consular officer deems it necessary. The bond amount can vary from $5,000 to $15,000 and will be determined individually based on the interview at the embassy.

It should be noted that paying the bond does not guarantee visa approval. This condition applies only in cases where the visa is approved and only at the discretion of the consul.

This requirement applies to citizens of Kyrgyzstan applying for a B1/B2 visa who meet the established criteria and are required to pay the bond at the discretion of the consular officer. The location of the application submission does not matter—the rule will apply regardless of the country where the visa is processed.

The bond payment procedure begins only after official notification from the consulate. The applicant must fill out form I-352, and payment is made exclusively through the government payment system Pay.gov. The use of third-party resources or intermediaries is prohibited. If funds are submitted without the indication of the consular officer, they are non-refundable.

The bond will be automatically refunded upon meeting one of the following conditions: if the person left the USA before the end of the allowed stay, if the trip did not take place and the visa expired, or if entry into the country was denied at the border.

However, the bond may be withheld in cases of visa violations, for example, if an overstay is recorded or if the applicant remained in the USA after the visa expired, or submitted a request to change status, including a request for asylum. In such cases, the information will be forwarded to U.S. immigration authorities for a decision on the violation of bond conditions.

Additionally, there will be restrictions on entry and exit points. Citizens who have paid the visa bond will be required to cross the U.S. border only through three airports: Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), and Washington (Dulles, IAD). Violating this rule may lead to issues with exit documentation and, consequently, the loss of the bond.

Thus, the USA is effectively introducing a mechanism of financial responsibility for compliance with visa regulations, relying on statistics of overstays by foreigners.
