Starting January 21, 2023, U.S. embassies will begin rejecting immigration visa applications from citizens of 75 countries, including Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, Thailand, Nigeria, Somalia, Egypt, Iraq, and Yemen. This was reported by Fox News, referencing a directive from the U.S. State Department that was distributed among American diplomatic missions on January 14.

According to information published by Fox News, this decision was made to tighten control over immigrants. The State Department document states that this measure is aimed at preventing an influx of individuals who may become a "burden on society" by receiving social benefits and assistance.
Current visa applications from citizens of the specified countries will be rejected in accordance with existing laws, while the State Department will review its immigration control procedures. The duration of the new rules is not specified.

Earlier, media reports emerged about the White House administration's intentions to limit visa issuance to foreigners with chronic illnesses such as obesity, cancer, or diabetes. Officials believe that such individuals may remain in the country and start using social welfare programs or be placed in specialized institutions. In November 2022, the U.S. also suspended the processing of all asylum applications.
