In collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry has initiated a new project aimed at creating climate-resilient value chains, the ministry's press service reports.

The Government of Japan has allocated $4.5 million for the implementation of this initiative. The project will support 17,000 small farmers operating in three southern regions of the country: Batken, Jalal-Abad, and Osh.

These regions have been identified as the most vulnerable to climate risks and water resource shortages.

Key Areas of the Project

The initiative will focus on increasing productivity and strengthening agricultural cooperatives. Farmers will gain access to various resources that will help them develop their production.

The project will be implemented with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Mirbek Duyshiev, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, noted that this partnership will unite efforts to support small farmers, aligning with national priorities for the development of the agricultural sector by 2030.

Japanese Ambassador Hirano Ryuichi emphasized that the initiative contributes to strengthening Kyrgyzstan's food system and ensuring economic stability for rural communities in the face of climate change.

Japan continues to be a strategic partner of the WFP in Kyrgyzstan; previously, the Japanese government provided emergency assistance to the country and supported projects aimed at developing human capital.
