The Cabinet of Ministers plans to explore the possibilities of pumped-storage hydropower plants, which has become part of a new government action plan.

This initiative includes an analysis of aspects such as hydrology, water balances, geology, and ecology for the construction of pumped-storage plants. The main task of these facilities is to accumulate energy from renewable sources and provide it during periods of increased demand.

Discussion on this issue will take place in 2026-2027, after which a list of sites with the greatest potential for implementing such projects will be created. The responsible bodies appointed are the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Ecology, and the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan.

A pumped-storage hydropower plant is one type of energy storage system based on hydropower. This system consists of two reservoirs located at different elevations. It generates electricity through the flow of water from the upper reservoir to the lower one, passing through a turbine. When energy storage is required, the system uses electricity to pump water back to the upper reservoir using pumps. Thus, the pumped-storage hydropower plant functions as a large-scale battery, capable of storing and delivering energy to the grid as needed.
