The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan plans to develop a hydrogen energy concept that will be in effect until 2035. This initiative is included in the current government action plan.

It is expected that the strategy will be adopted between the first quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028.

Before starting work on the strategy, a scientific study is scheduled to be conducted, covering aspects such as the creation of an atlas of promising sites, modeling the cost of production, and analyzing environmental impacts. This research is expected to be completed between the first quarter of 2026 and the fourth quarter of 2027.

Upon completion of the strategy development, the government intends to prepare a feasibility study for a pilot project on the production of "green" hydrogen based on renewable energy sources, which is planned to be implemented between the first quarter of 2028 and the fourth quarter of 2030.

Additional information:

Recently, two methods for hydrogen production were considered in Kazakhstan. The first method involves extracting hydrogen from natural gas using steam conversion. This is the most common and economically justified method; however, it requires the implementation of carbon capture technologies, which significantly increases costs.

The second method is water electrolysis, which, although more expensive, is potentially viable for hydrogen production due to Kazakhstan's sufficient water resources, especially in the southern and central regions.
