How to cope with the overpopulation of the capital?
Aysylbek Ayupov, an economist and professor, expressed the need to revise the state policy on internal migration in an interview with Vesti.kg.
According to Ayupov, the ongoing mass migration of citizens of Kyrgyzstan to Bishkek and the Chui region could lead to serious consequences in the future.
He emphasized: "It is necessary to develop the regions, as they have enormous potential. This applies to both industrial and agricultural development of small towns. The migration of all residents of the country to one capital should be limited. This is important not only from the perspective of ecology and health but also for the economic growth of the country. The development of industry should contribute to the progress of the entire country, not just the capital," he added.
Furthermore, Ayupov noted that due to the increasing number of residents, authorities are forced to build on lands that were previously used for agriculture in Bishkek.
He stated: "Vegetables used to be grown on these lands, and now houses are being built. What will happen next? How long will the existing utilities hold up? People want to develop their homes, and for this, they need to create appropriate conditions," he concluded.
