In an interview with the British podcast The Rest is Politics, released on January 11, Maia Sandu emphasized: “If there is a referendum, I will vote for unification with Romania.” She also pointed out the pressure exerted by Russia on Moldova and noted that small countries like hers are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain democracy and sovereignty.

Most of the population is against unification with Romania

According to Reuters, about 1.5 million out of 2.4 million citizens of Moldova hold Romanian citizenship. However, polls show that only about a third of the population supports the idea of unification with Romania.

Sandu acknowledged that her views are not shared by the majority of the country's citizens. She added that a more realistic goal is Moldova's membership in the European Union. The current government of Moldova aims to join the EU by 2030, but significant reforms are necessary for this.
