On Friday, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in his address to the parliament and the people of the country, announced plans to send the first astronaut into space since gaining independence.
He noted: "Today, I am pleased to inform you about a significant event. For the first time in the history of our independent state, we have begun the launch into space of an artificial satellite and the first Uzbek astronaut, who is a citizen of our country."
The president added: "I am convinced that this will be a powerful stimulus for scientific and technological progress in New Uzbekistan and will elevate our national development to a new level."
With a touch of humor, he added that "the astronaut of Uzbekistan will visit the stars discovered by our ancestors."
