The Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh approved in the first reading the bill on tightening responsibility for drunk driving

Mandatory driver's license for mopeds is being introduced

Today, January 13, at a meeting of the Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on judicial and legal issues, law enforcement, the fight against crime, and countering corruption, the bill "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Kyrgyz Republic on Ensuring Road Safety" was reviewed.

As part of the bill, it is proposed to increase the period of deprivation of driving rights for driving under the influence of alcohol from one year to two, and in the case of a repeated violation — up to four years.

Additionally, it is planned to tighten the punishment for refusal to undergo a medical examination, which could lead to a long-term deprivation of the driver's license instead of a short-term arrest. For those who repeatedly drive under the influence without a license, the possibility of administrative arrest is also being discussed.

If drunk driving leads to injuries or fatalities, the punishment will be even stricter, including long prison sentences and mandatory deprivation of the right to operate vehicles.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Oktobur Urmambetov noted that the bill proposes to introduce a mandatory driver's license of subcategory "A1" for operating mopeds. This, according to the authors, should improve discipline on the roads and reduce the number of accidents.
