At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, a working group was formed with the task of preparing for the commissioning of the Borteeg deposit, located in the Tavan Tolgoi cluster, as well as selecting investors.
As part of this project, the following activities are planned:
- conducting a transparent competition for investors;
- forming market prices for coal;
- ensuring that a larger portion of profits remains in Mongolia;
- prioritizing the development of value-added production;
- all stages of bringing the deposit into economic circulation will be open and public.
To initially assess investor interest, the government decided to hold an open international request for proposals on January 9 of this year.
The implementation of this project will create opportunities to increase the income of the local population from natural resources, as well as replenish the National Wealth Fund and form financial resources to address social and economic issues.
In 2020, the technical and economic justification (TEO) for the Borteeg deposit was completed, and detailed exploration was conducted in accordance with JORC standards. The updated TEO is planned to be presented in the current quarter of 2026.
The special licensed area of Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC covers a strategically important group of coal deposits, including Tsenkhi, Bortolgoi, Onchkharaat, and Borteeg.
