Starting in 2026, a new Criminal Code came into effect in Indonesia that prohibits extramarital intimate relationships. According to Reuters, violations of this law are punishable by imprisonment for up to one year.

The ban applies not only to local residents but also to foreign tourists arriving on Indonesian islands, including Bali. Under the new legislation, the right to file complaints about violations of family values is retained only by close relatives — for example, a deceived spouse or the parents and children of the affected party. This law is part of a comprehensive legal reform aimed at abolishing outdated colonial norms.
